1、Brushless ESC
ESC is called Electronic Speed Control, ESC can be divided into brushless motor ESC and brush motor ESC. As we commonly use brushless motors, the following are brushless motor ESC.
2、Role
(1) Drive brushless motor
Brushless motor is a three-phase DC motor with three input power lines, directly connected to the battery is not turning, need to use another drive device to turn, brushless ESC is to play this role.
(2) Speed control
All RC models, vehicles, aircraft, boats need to adjust the motor speed to control the running speed of the model, electronic speed controller as the name implies to adjust the speed of the motor.
(3) BEC
Models in addition to motors, there are receivers, flight control, servos, etc. need power supply, most of them are the working voltage is 5-6V, while most of the model with the battery voltage is 7.4V (2S) or more, directly with such a high voltage to the receiver, etc. will certainly burn, so the battery voltage needs to be reduced to about 5V to use. Since the ESC is connected to the battery, why not integrate the buck regulator function into the ESC, which is the so-called ESC with BEC (Battery Eliminate Circuit), the ESC with BEC can be directly for the receiver and other power supply.
3, ESC parameters
(1) continuous output current: the maximum number of current (A) that the ESC can continuously output, the maximum input current of the motor can not be greater than this number, otherwise it will burn the ESC. Such as the motor needs 18A current under full throttle, matching the ESC continuous output current to be greater than 18A, taking into account the margin of safety, it is recommended to choose to add more than 30% of the current, 18A is recommended to choose 25A-30A continuous output current ESC. Select the continuous output current is not too large, it will waste the ESC’s ability, and the higher the continuous output current, the more expensive and heavier the ESC.
(2) Instantaneous current: the maximum current that can be output in a short time, such as 40A/10 seconds, if you continue to output at this current beyond this short time, it will damage the ESC. Therefore, the instantaneous current can last for a limited time, and cannot work for a long time at this current.
(3) Input voltage: the voltage range of the ESC normal operation, in addition to the voltage range directly written, usually will also use the number of battery sections to indicate, such as 2-6S lithium batteries, or 5-18 NiMH / NiCd batteries. Ensure that the ESC is within the effective working voltage range when in use.
(4) BEC output: In addition to the BEC support ESC is written on the linear or switching, there are output voltage and corresponding current, such as 5.25V/6V, continuous output 7A, instantaneous output 15A. output voltage is changed by ESC programming.
(5) Weight: the weight of the ESC, some industry conscience to write the weight with and without wires at the same time, in order to more accurately calculate the total weight.
4、All-in-one ESC
Multi-axis aircraft each motor to an ESC, each ESC has a power input, power output, signal line three groups of lines, the more axes the more lines, not only wiring trouble and increase the weight, all-in-one ESC set into multiple ESC together, power input only need a group (such as four-axis, can save 6 power input lines and 12 pairs of 24 banana plugs), simplify the wiring, reduce the plug and can reduce weight.
The biggest disadvantage of all-in-one ESC is that one of the ESCs is broken, the entire replacement cost is high.
All-in-one ESC is suitable for crossing machine
5、Throttle travel setting
The motor speed is 0 when the throttle lever of the remote control is the lowest, and the motor reaches the highest speed when the throttle is pushed to the highest. When using ESC for the first time or replacing the remote control, you need to reset the ESC throttle range, otherwise the motor may still be spinning when the throttle lever is lowest, or the motor is already at maximum speed when the throttle is not pushed to the highest. Especially for multi-axis aircraft, if you do not set the throttle range, several motor speed inconsistencies can not fly.
Different manufacturers of ESC adjust the throttle range method is different, roughly first open the remote control, pull the throttle to the lowest, and then ESC connected to the battery, and so prompt a certain regular sound, the throttle pushed to the highest, to complete the adjustment process.
6, ESC programming
In order to get better ESC performance, most ESCs support parameter adjustment, which is the so-called programming.
Usually support programming items.
(1) brake settings: ESC without brake function, after the throttle is closed, the motor still has inertia rotation. After opening, the motor stops quickly when the throttle is closed. ESC can set no brake, and brake speed (very fast, very slow, etc.).
2)Battery type: set to use Li-ion or NiMH battery, get better performance according to the battery familiarity.
3)Low voltage protection: When the battery is monitored to be below a certain voltage, the ESC does the action, such as reducing the power or cutting off the output immediately, to avoid over discharging the battery.
(4) Low voltage value setting: set the voltage value of the battery that triggers the voltage protector action. It is recommended to set this value to maximize the protection of the battery to avoid over-discharge and extend battery life.
(5) Lithium battery section number: set the automatic judgment of the number of battery sections, or manually specify the number of battery sections. When the voltage is low automatic judgment may be wrong, it is recommended to manually set the number of battery sections to improve security.
(6) BEC voltage: Set the BEC output voltage.
